WHEN it comes to employment, it seems graduates from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have it good.
According to the university's latest Graduate Employment Survey, those who graduated last year are getting jobs in less time than the previous batch — and they are receiving higher salaries and multiple job offers to boot.
The annual study revealed that 94 per cent of the graduates already have jobs. This is a 2 per cent increase over the previous year, which was a record then.

Among the 29 courses surveyed, 10 had a 100 per cent employment rate for its graduates. The average starting pay for an NUS graduate has also increased by more than 5 per cent to $2,500 a month. Professional degree holders now start at an average of $2,750 and non-professional degree holders start at $2,300.
Of the 3,050 survey respondents, nearly all landed jobs within six months of graduation.
An all-time high of 84 per cent of the graduates found jobs within three months.
Slightly more than one in two graduates received two or more job offers, the highest in five years.
In fact, one in 12 actually received more than four job offers.
NUS Vice-Provost for Education Professor Lily Kong attributed the rosy report to the improved economy, as well as the enhanced services of the university's Career Centre, which organises job fairs, career skills workshops, and recruitment talks.
One value-add was the overseas exposure some students received during exchange programmes and at NUS Overseas Colleges (NOCs).
Mechanical Engineering graduate Juliet Low, for example, went on the NOC programme at Silicon Valley and is now commanding a salary of $5,000 in her first job.
"I was able to hone important networking and leadership skills and learnt to adapt quickly to new situations," she said.
NUS is convinced venturing out of Singapore is the way to go.
Said Prof Kong: "These jobs require three or four years of experience but some NOC students managed to get them. We can definitely do more in this direction."

this is good news for all current undergraduates of course....and i think it's not juz restricted to NUS alone...i think it applies for NTU and SMU as well....so, congrats to all my frens out there! =)
I was rather zapped by the fact that the NOC programme has been receiving more and more recognition ever since it started like 3yrs ago? i think it's quite a young programme....Previously, the most successful story i've heard of was this Engin guy who went on NOC and eventually owned 8 co-patents with the startup company he was working with in USA....and he was even offered an extended contract of 6mths and a full Engineer salary...it was all in US$.....i was quite inspired by dat when i decided to apply last year....
Now, this another Engin student, Juliet Low is commanding a starting salary of $5000....wow...another inspiring story.....Even though I might not be able to startup my own company upon graduation or while in the NOC programme, i'd be equally happy to be able to hav such a high starting salary...hahaz....of cos, it's not easily attainable...but.....dreams hav to be dreamt of....before they have a chance to be materialised....
I think i'll receive my allocated destination in a few week's time....regardless of Bio Valley, Shanghai, Stockholm or Silicon Valley....i'll be equally looking forward to it.....
Talk abt the pros and cons of each destination later on....time to bathe...and start dreaming and planning how to realise my dreams!
Dreams....Dreams.....tHe ActuALisAtioN iS neVeR eAsy...Nevertheless, tHey pRoviDe hOpe, inSpirAtioN and of cOs oPPortuniTieS!
